چکیده

We explore the implications of a subtle “default” choice that firms make in their regular reporting practices, namely that firms typically repeat what they most recently reported. Using the complete history of regular quarterly and annual filings by U.S. corporations from 1995-2014, we show that when firms make an active change in their reporting practices, this conveys an important signal about the firm. Changes to the language and construction of financial reports have strong implications for firms’ future returns: a portfolio that shorts “changers” and buys “non-changers” earns up to 188 basis points per month (over 22% per year) in abnormal returns in the future. These reporting changes are concentrated in the management discussion (MD&A) section. Changes in language referring to the executive (CEO and CFO) team, or regarding litigation, are especially informative for future returns. JEL Classification: G12, G14, G02

A Field Guide to Personalized Reserve Prices

We study the question of setting and testing reserve prices in single item auctions when the bidders are not identical. At a high level, there are two generalizations of the standard second price auction: in the lazy version we first determine the winner, and then apply reserve prices; in the eager version we first discard the bidders not meeting their reserves, and then determine the winner am...

X VCG Auctions with Reserve Prices: Lazy or Eager

VCG auctions with reserve prices are practical simple auctions with provably approximately optimal revenue, and have been crucial in the analysis of other appealing auctions. When different reserve prices are applied to different bidders, the auctioneer may choose to apply the reserves either before (eagerly) or after (lazily) the comparison of bids. Both auction forms have been studied in vari...

Lazy Prices: Vector Representations of Financial Disclosures and Market Outperformance

The ”Efficient Market Hypothesis” (EMH) states that market outperformance is impossible through expert selection because each stock price efficiently incorporates and reflects all relevant evaluative information. We study the validity of EMH by analyzing the latent information of financial disclosures year over year. Specifically, we explore the concept of ”Lazy Prices”, the idea that changes i...

An Improved LAZY-AR Approach to Bayesian Network Inference

We propose LAZY arc-reversal with variable elimination (LAZY-ARVE) as a new approach to probabilistic inference in Bayesian networks (BNs). LAZY-ARVE is an improvement upon LAZY arcreversal (LAZY-AR), which was very recently proposed and empirically shown to be the state-of-the-art method for exact inference in discrete BNs. The primary advantage of LAZY-ARVE over LAZY-AR is that the former onl...

What, another paper on the new economy? When financial markets are raking through the debris of $8 trillion in lost equity value, and “.com” is a reviled four-symbol word, a paper on the impact of the new economy on productivity would seem as welcome as an analysis of the role of whales in the lighting revolution. In fact, the new economy (or, more precisely, information technologies) continues...
